Living in a state under the rule of law is the state’s promise to respect your rights as provided by the law. But the law is made by people, it is applied by people and it can be a real fight to ensure that the promise is respected in reality. This is where I see my role as a lawyer for my clients: To make sure your rights are respected.

In my work, I have chosen to focus on criminal law and migration law, two areas of law where there is an inevitable confrontation between those who hold such rights and those who must respect them. The state is not only the guarantor of individual rights, but also authorized to infringe upon them, following due process.

Here is where the right to have rights has to be defended and where I see myself as the lawyer working to ensure that the rule of law respects the individual.
